JAIME ANSTEAD by Owen Keehnen

Jaime Anstead has some solid horror roots that just keep growing deeper. Her newest movie, 'Soul Searchers', with husband actor/writer/director Bentley Mitchum is a labor of love which she is also producing. The couple had previously joined forces, costarring in the 2003 feature 'Death Train'. Next up they are busy at work on a new horror project which Jaime is also starring/producing -- 'The House at Hell's Gate'. As to her horror past --- who can forget Jaime as Janey Colfax in 2002's ''The Back Lot Murders' (with Priscilla Barnes, Corey Haim, and Charles Fleischer) where she is axed in such a deliciously bloody manner? Not me. And her lap dance in a Catholic schoolgirl uniform in 'Soul Searchers' sounds pretty unforgettable as well. Jaime was also gracious enough to give us this very memorable Racks and Razors interview.

)Jaime, what was the first movie you ever saw that scared the shit out of you?

'The Exorcist'. Movies about demonic possession really freak me out and that movie had some pretty creepy images.

So tell me about your role as Cat in your newest film 'SOUL SEARCHERS'.

I play a girl that is a sexy stripper. She uses her looks to entice Charlie (the male lead) into a strip bar where he meets some more people that end up changing his life. By the end of the movie, Cat turns out to be much more than she originally appears. It was a great experience because before this movie I had never even been inside a strip club, much less danced as a stripper. Bentley took me to this dive strip bar and I had the chance to see what these dancers really do. One dancer gave me some signature moves and pointers.

Can you give me a bit of a teaser that will make the movie irresistable?

I wear a Catholic School girl outfit and give the lead actor a lap dance.

What were the best and the worst aspects of being directed by your husband?

Working with Bentley was great. He is really good at making people feel comfortable while nudging them in the right direction. So, the entire experience was very positive. I guess the worst aspect was during the strip club scene. I had to give another guy a lap dance with my husband watching not the most comfortable, but I just closed my eyes and pretended it was him! I guess I did a good job because the lead actor told me that he dreamed about me that night!

You also were the producer of 'SOUL SEARCHERS'. Was that something that came easily to you or were the duties of the producer a challenge?

I love working as a producer. Contracts, numbers, organizing and schedules are all things that I find pleasurable to do, however, I cannot say these duties were not a challenge. Bentley and I ended up doing almost everything on this shoot, but I had a really good time and learned a great deal.

Jaime, I really enjoyed your work as Janey Colfax in 'THE BACK LOT MURDERS' with Priscilla Barnes and Corey Haim. I want to hear all about the effects that they used to create your awesome axe death scene.

The death in Backlot was really messy. There was a tube (that was hooked up to some kind of air compressor type machine) that went up the leg of my pants, up the back of my shirt, over my shoulder and hooked into a harness that I was wearing that also held the axe. On action, they turned the machine on and blood pumped through the tube and shot out near my solar plexus, totally drenching me in sticky, disgusting movie blood. Movie blood feels like pancake syrup and if you can imagine your entire body covered with this substance, in the middle of a chilly night, you might guess that it was far from pleasant. It was worth it because I think the effect looks great and thank God there was a shower on set!

Any good behind the scenes memory from that movie you would like to put in a timecapsule?

I really enjoyed working with Charles Fleischer and Priscilla Barnes. Both were very cool people and had great stories. I also like being on the backlot of Universal. It was neat to see and be able to walk around on the sets for Psycho, Jurassic Park, etc. It is not something that everyone gets to do - even if you take the Universal Studios tour, you have to stay on the bus and can only look at the sets from afar.

Tell me about your work as Marina in 'DEATH TRAIN'.

One of the things I like about being an actress is the hair and makeup, so it was kind of a bummer that I had to dress down and wear virtually zero makeup and have flat hair. Death Train was shot in Bulgaria, and I loved it there. The food was incredible. We were actually there during 9/11 and the people were so nice, which helped to shield us from the severity of the situation. We felt fairly safe because if there was some type of war, who would attack Bulgaria?

Any other Jaime Anstead projects pending that the folks at www.racksandrazors.com should know about?

I am producing and acting in an upcoming horror movie called, 'The House at Hell's Gate'. This is our journey into the classic slasher horror genre. The characters are really great and the monster/killer is just beyond creepy. Expect a lot of blood, sick gory deaths and of course, some boobies (not mine). It was written by Bentley and his writing partner and Bentley will be directing as well. It is a really fun and exciting script, so I am looking forward to shooting it.

Okay, we're pulling the car into the Jaime Anstead Drive In. What three horror movies are on the triple bill for the night and what goodies are they going to be serving up at the concession stand?

Jaws- this movie sticks with you for a lifetime and the kicker is that the monster is real. Who hasn't been swimming in the ocean and gotten that stomach pang from thinking about the images of that shark? 'Nightmare on Elm Street'- I think I was in the 6th or 7th grade when I first saw this movie and it haunted me for quite a while. The scariest part was that song - 1, 2 Freddy's coming for you.... and 'Sometimes They Come Back'- I love watching Bentley on screen and I really enjoyed this movie. I watched it when it first came out on television and I loved it - little did I know I'd be married to one of the stars. At my concession stand - I like sugar better than chocolate, so I want sweet tarts, pixie stix and popcorn. Maybe some funyuns and an endless supply of cold Coca Cola Classic.

Jaime - vampires, zombies, creatures, aliens, witches, psychos, werewolves, telemarketers...what does it for your horror wise and why?

Hands down- vampires. I love vampire movies- they are all so sexy and dark. There is such seduction involved in a good vampire movie and they are all very ritualistic, which I find fascinating.

What makes you go psycho in real life?

I am just a bit obsessive compulsive, so weird things bug me like the line at the toes of the sock. It does not matter if it is my sock or someone else's - I want the line to be perfectly straight as well as the sock to be on properly. I also hate when people use words and/or phrases like anywho, brain fart and worst of all coinkidink.

What makes you scream in real life?

I hate snakes. However, it never fails, if we are outside working in the yard, I always have to be the one that the snakes visit. I also do not like for anyone to touch my belly button. When I was little, my parents told me that if I played with it, it could come untied and I would die hmmmm maybe a good death for a future movie?!
