BATTLING WITH THE TALL MAN ALONG WITH HIS STEEL KILLER BALLS AND KILLER DWARFS AND TRYING TO SERCH FOR HIS SUPPOSED DEAD BROTHER JODY: THE A. MICHAEL BALDWIN INTERVIEW by Greg Tiderington

Most of you know who Michael Baldwin would be as he was the lead actor playing the troubled 14 year old boy named Mike Pearson in the cult classic flick 'Phantasm' scared of losing his older brother Jody since his parents have died and discovering the creepy Tall Man and his killer dwarfs and what they do with the corpses along by being attacked by the Tall man's steel balls and then reprised his roles in all the sequels except for part 2.
He brought alot to his part in the films and was happy to get an interview from him.
He worked with Don Coscarelli beforehand in the comedy motion picture of 'Kenny & Company' which also co-starred Reggie Bannister along with some guest starring roles in the hour long sitcom 'Eight is Enough'.
Michael's also writing his own novel as well as writing film projects since he wrote and co-starred in one during the millenium called 'Vice Girls'
We are all begging to see a 'Phantasm 5' to end the series since Reggie was going back in time to try and stop the Tall Man's evil deeds and to save Mike and his brother Jody but who knows what's going to come out of that.

At what age did you see yourself as an entertainer?

I started acting professionally at about 7 years of age doing voiceovers in my dad’s tv and educational shows.

Did you see yourself acting in horror films?

No.

What was your first acting gig?

First gig I think was a voiceover for an animated Bank of America educational film directed by my dad, Gerard Baldwin.<

How did you land the part of Mike Pearson in 'Phantasm'?

I had made a film with Don Coscarelli, Kenny & Company, and sometime later, Don wrote the part of Mike pearson for me.

What was it like being on set of the film?

It’s a helluva lot of fun. Being a kid and working as a professional in an adult world is something special and deffinetly gives you a leg up on your peers as you get older.

What is your most memorable scene you did?

I think I like the “build the hammer gun” scene.

What was it like working with Angus Scrimm and Bill Thornbury?

They are both terrific guys. Professioanl and kind.

What was racing through your head during the dream sequence with Scrimm over your bed and zombie dragging you down?

I think I was thining: Holy shit it’s cold our here!

Was that scene a struggle to do?

Yeah, cuz is was freezing.

How long did it take for you to do the scene in the mortuary when the steel ball was coming after you or when Scrimm was chasing after you? do give us the gritty details?

I really don’t remember. As you know, these movie scenes are shot out of sequence and so it’s hard to say.

You Thornbury and Reggie Bannister all looked like you were having fun when you were trying to snuff that bug like creature by trying to stuff it down in the garbage disposer. What was it like doing that scene?

That was a very early scene we shot. Early in the production I mean. A lot of fun, action packed. A good time had by all.

When Scrimm drags you in the mirror at the end was Don Cocarelli planning to do a sequel regardless even if it was almost ten years later?

No.

How come you didn't return in the first sequel and was replaced by James LeGros?

Universal wanted to hire somebody else, simple as that.
I think they made a mistake.

Were you excited to be back in part 3?

Yes, of course.

What was the experience like in part 3?

Fun and challenging.

What was it like lying in a hospital bed with Irene Roseen as a demon nurse trying to kill you and the steel ball trying to attack?

Irene is GREAT. I love that scene. She really was quite scarry.

When you had your first scene driving in your vehicle in part 4 was it on a set or were you actually driving on a road with camera's filming you?

That is a “Process Shot” meaning the car is on a set. Not actually driving.

Was it a struggle to do your scene in a rocky area with the killer dwarfs around you and rocks falling on them?

No.

What was your favourite scene to do in part 4?

I think it would have to be that scene we call “The what might have been” scene.
You know Bill, me, and Reg sitting on the hood of the cuda, outside playing, singing, drinking beer in the sunshine. That day the weather had been just horrible. Raining very hard all day and it didn’t look like we were going to get the shot. Then just at the last possible moment, somehow, the clouds broke and the sun shone through just long enough for us to get the shot. Fairly miraculous. And one of the many unusual and unexpected scenes in P4 that I like.

Now there were clips that were never shown on the first film as flashback sequences? Now were these going to be used in the original film but in the cutting floor they decided not to use them or did Coscarelli film them intentionally for a future sequel?

Those were just scenes that were deleted in post. He never intended to use them, I don’t think. But I’m sure glad he still had all that negative, right? I think the juxtiposition of the old and new footage is pretty cool.

Now is there going to be a part 5 as we all are patiently waiting for one as the story isn't over yet. It seems Coscerelli is more focused on making 'Bubba Ho Tep' movies and projects like that but we all want a good ending and it's keeping all of us in agony. Please give us any info as possible as I heard Scrimm is getting up there and want to finish off the series while he's still got it in him to act.

Hard to say

This may be a stupid question but back when you did the first film lots said you had a Danny Bonaduce kind of appeal to you. Were you ever approached to be in a show with him as his brother or a guest appearance in 'The Partridge Family' as a cousin?

No. Never heard that one.

Are you planning to be in any other horror film projects?

Not this week.

What have you been up to these days?

Writing film projects, finishing up my novel, teaching people to play winning poker, raising my little kids.

Now here's some fun stuff: What's your favourite horror films?

For me, 'The Shinning', hands down.

What show were you in that you'd like to change?

I’d like to change a few scenes from 'Phantasm 3' that I don’t particularly like.

What are your ambitions in life?

I’d like my children to be abundantly happy.
