NATHAN DASHWOOD IS HERE by Owen Keehnen

British Columbia actor NATHAN DASHWOOD is making some serious waves in the horror world. Most recently he completed a role in 'Stan Helsing', a comedy horror spoof from writer/director Bo Zenga. However, most of Nate's other credits aren't quite so funny. His film appearances include a grueling role in 'Gutterballs', a gory crazed horror flick set in a bowling alley (and it all happens in those nasty shared bowling shoes too), a role in the popular TV superseries 'Smallville', the role of Dallas in 'The Gutter Diaries', the 2006 flick 'Windup', and also a role with Racks and Razors own Greg Tiderington in the chiller 'They Came from the Attic'. That was then and this is now. Nathan is about to graduate to starring roles, his next project is the title role in Ryan Nicholson's upcoming surreal horror opus 'Hanger'. At 24 the sky seems the limit for this talented and charming actor who I can't really bad mouth since he took a few moments from his schedule to chat with me. (Actually, if he wasn't talented and charming I would still bad mouth him.)

Hey, so is it Nathan or Nate?

I go by Nathan, but a lot of people call me Nate.

Nate, can you start the Racks and Razors readers off with a visual and describe the room where you are answering these questions?

I am in my large bedroom/office I guess you can call it. I'm surrounded by hundreds of DVD's and I'm sitting next to my window which overlooks the mountains and ocean.

You're still quite young. Has acting always been something you wanted to do?

Acting kind of just fell into my lap in a way. When I was younger I was heavily into sports especially baseball. From the time I was very little all I ever wanted to do was be a professional baseball player but certain injuries and incidents in my life ended that dream. I was always a pretty outgoing person who liked a lot of attention so in ways I was always performing. It really started at my high school in Ladysmith, BC. I took a film and television course where I would write/direct/edit/act in the films for class. After graduation I moved to Vancouver and took a part-time acting and a part-time directing course and loved both. I later applied to the full-time programs at Capilano College where I got accepted into both and choose the route of an actor.

Okay, so tell me about 'Stan Helsing', the horror comedy you are currently filming for Bo Zenga?

There's only a limited amount of information I can release about this film at this time but I'll do my best. The film is currently in post production and will be coming out I think in 2009. Writer/Director Bo Zenga has managed to create a script that is hilarious and I think a lot of people are going to be highly entertained by it. He's bringing back the lost art of a GOOD spoof film. The film revolves around the character Stan Helsing played by Steve Howey who goes on an epic journey to save a town from some of cinematic greatest monsters.

You played AJ in 'Gutterballs', a horror flick set in a bowling alley. What was your most memorable filming experience from that shoot?

First off I would just like to say that Writer/Director Ryan Nicolson is special f/x genius and along with that he is one that loves to push boundaries.... This brings me to this experience. The most memorable experience on this shoot was definitely the rape scene. This was a very challenging disturbing experience as an actor. For those of you that haven't seen the film yet, there's about a fifteen minute long rape scene that is just gruesome. Getting into that state of mind to perform such a gruesome long scene was a very exhausting experience mentally and physically, it took a lot out of the actors. We actually had to shoot this scene on two different days because Ryan felt it wasn't savage enough. With the long shoot days and the two days of doing a rape scene some members of the cast along with me had nightmares of that particular scene many nights after shooting.

That sounds tough. I have also heard you have a role in Ryan Nicolson's upcoming horror flick 'Hanger'. Can you tell me a little bit more about that project?

Ryan is playing his cards pretty close to his chest on this project so once again I can't reveal too much. I will be playing the character of 'Hanger' in this film. Filming will begin in mid November. It's a very gritty film that involves pimps and prostitutes and just all sorts of scum of the earth. This film is definitely going to be a horror film like you've never seen before I can promise you that. The characters have crazy prosthetics in this film and there are some insane kill scenes with lots of red stuff being splattered around. They have also created a My Space page called Hanger the movie which will have the main characters in the film as the top friends that you can actually add which I thought was a pretty cool idea.

One of your early credits is a role in 'They Came from the Attic' with the amazing Racks and Razors guru Greg Tiderington. Can you tell us something about that movie that is going to make it irresistible to readers?

You mean besides that fact that I'm in it? KIDDING! Writer/Director Jason Mills and the crew did just an incredible job on this film it looks really great very eye pleasing. I'd say this film isn't like you're typical horror film it has a lot of emotional levels in it that add that little extra to it, a lot of that is thanks to the talented lead of the film Nicola Elbro who plays Jen. With all that aside this film is scary with great f/x and the creatures are just amazing, they are very creepy and they are out for blood!

Was Greg a huge diva on the set?

Greg is the biggest diva I have ever worked with on any project! Ha-ha just kidding Greg... or am I? Dunh...dunh....dunh!....

That's sort of a lot of horror credits for a young actor. Is horror something you have naturally been drawn to making or has it been just the way your career opportunities have been unfolding?

Yeah it kind of is, isn't it? What's with that? Ha-ha. It started out as wanting to have the experience of being in a horror film then from there more and more opportunities presented themselves to me and I accepted them happily.

Your credits also include an appearance in an episode of 'Smallville'. So Nathan, if you were a superhero what would be your special powers and what would be your weakness?

My super power would be the ability to change the weather. Weakness? I have no weaknesses! But if I really have to choose I guess it would be love.... insert the awww's here.

So it sounds like there is a lot of work in British Columbia. What is the film community there like; can you give me some adjectives that accurately describe it?

Steadily, unsteady! It comes in waves. Some days you're riding that wave the next you're drowning in the sea with nothing around.

So back in the 50s they made all those movies 'I Was a Teenage Werewolf' and 'I Was a Teenage Frankenstein'. If they were to make your film bio it would be called 'I Was a Teenage ____________'.......and why?

Hurricane. I was a hurricane of emotions as a teenager. I went through a lot of emotional stuff in my life. I was like two different people trying to get along in one body. I could be the funny, most caring guy in the world or be thrown into a fit of rage and tears.

You gotta love those hormones. So somewhat going along with that - vampires, werewolves, aliens, creatures, psychos, witches, zombies, demons, telemarketers - what horror staple is your favorite and why?

I would have to say films about aliens. Although, I feel a lot of films about aliens haven't been done properly but when they are WOW they are freaky. Fire in the Sky is one of my favorites.

What was the first movie to make you sleep with the lights on?

Definitely, 'Nightmare on Elm Street'!

We're pulling into the Nathan Dashwood Drive In. What three horror movies are featured on the triple bill tonight and what goodies are they going to be serving up at the concession stand?

'Children of the Corn', 'IT', and I'm sorry people but 'The Blair Witch Project', that movie terrified me! As far as goodies go nothing but peanut M & M's, sour patch kids, and good ol' fashioned movie theatre popcorn.

Since it's October I need to ask what you are dressing up for this Halloween.

I would love to go as my 'Hanger' character but since that's not an option I'm going to go with Two Face from Batman.

What's something that scares you in real life?

Clowns! What's the deal with those guys?!
