After grieving the death of their mother, a little girl Sawyer (Vivien Lyra Blair) experiences something scary from her closet that goes underneath her bed when her lights go out in the night.
She goes to the aid of her older sister Sadie (Sophie Thatcher) about all of this and she doesn't believe her and tries to get her help.
However, Sadie is witnessing these scary stories that her sister was telling her and tries to find out some information at a residence from a guy that her father Will (Chris Messina) was counselling which was a disturbed man Lester (David Dastmalchian) who died shortly after, to get some information from herself
on what to do with these hauntings.

A strong beginning to a story with a toddler crying in his crib and then an offscreen shot on the boogeyman doing something gruesome which drew me in as to wondering what the whole film will be about.
When present day hits we have a somewhat troubled highschool girl Sadie going to her locker with some clicky girls with their interactions towards her. It made me wonder if they were giving her a hard time or not during the outcome of all this. Definetely Stephen King used his formula on this like he did with his other stories such as Carrie and Christine.
The dark mysterious moments unravel when her father Will's profession is a shrink and trying to help a troubled man who claimed that his family is killed. This moment was carefully shot and well focused by what was going on. This for sure looked spooky and intense to watch as to what goes on here.
Then a cute little girl in the family whom is Sawyer asking her Dad to check for monsters in the closet which looked natural for a child's fear before going to bed. This was all done in a great fashion as well as keeping my eyes focused and wondering if something will happen right then.
Suddenly every child's fear starts to occur especially something that lies under her bed and so fourth as all of this made me jump out of my seat that it was that scary. It worked like a charm especially when the story really concentrates on little Sawyer going underneath her bed to see if something is down there. This will leave you the chills big time.
The next day Sadie takes her sister to see a therapist as this was well concentrated by what goes on in the room. Plus it psychs you out when this therapist does a red light test to prove there's nothing wrong. When this happened I had a bad feeling that something is going to happen. A well written in moment.
Sadie's friend Bethany takes her to a home where that strange man during the near beginning of the story used to live and she goes into the home to look for stuff as well as some nice jumping moments. Also she meets up with a strange woman that explains the boogeyman explaining that this creature doesn't like light which of course was great to use in this story since we think that there's monsters lurking when it's dark. Perfect action and intense sequences that happens with this woman using her shotgun. Believe me folks this was full of terror and suspense. Very well done.
The terror doesn't stop when she flees from the home as we see something coming out of her mouth but it's making out like she's having a nightmare. Or is she!? Shocking moments indeed.
Bethany tries to bring her friends over Sadie's home to prove they're not bullies and things are boring. However, Sadie finds some marijuana and they pass it around. Suddenly something happens to her which looked intense and keeping my eyes watching for the outcome of this.
To top this all off, she is trapped in an art closet and she thinks that her so called friends are locking her in. Definetely made situations mysterious big time. It really made you wonder big time if they set her up or not. Or was it the boogeyman????
More terror arises when Sadie goes to the house again with the strange woman but uses Sadie as bait which boggles me greatly wondering if she will die from this. Definetely looked vicious as well as to think this monster is killed when something does happen. However when watching this I was thinking to myself that's too easy and BAM! Something happens.
The final moments looked great when Sadie tries to protect her family from harm to this thing with fast action performances which I won't give away. You'd have to check this moment for yourself.
Bottom line is that this is a great story on every childs fear of the dark. Some movies tried to base it on that before but didn't succeed as much. However, this one really makes it happen big time. Of course it was the masterpiece off of a Stephen King novel which he brings out the fear in anything that he writes.

The acting is very good in which Sophie Thatcher (Sadie Harper) in which she came across well as a somewhat outsider in school. She focused on how she interacts towards others. Plus was believeable as a caring big sister too. Does a nice job by acting like an all round nice person. Plus shows off great adernaline when the suspense piles up with her fears and aggressions too. Brought it all to an extreme big time.
Chris Messina (Will Harper) plays a good family man. He shows a nice calm and patient attitude. Also does well by showing her onscreen little daughter that there's no monsters in the closet when he checks as he brought that to a nice uplifting realistic attitude. Does well when he acts like a counsellor showing some good uncomfortable actions. For sure he studied this part inside out.
Vivien Lyra Blair (Sawyer Harper) brought on the perfect charm as the little girl being afraid of the dark and boy does she really show it with her crying emotions. Also does a nice job with her nice outgoing and innocent behavior. Plus had the right looks and appeal for this type of role. A great choice of casting.
Madison Hu
(Bethany) brought on the pizzaz and spunk into what she was talking about. She was good and clear within her speaking. Also shows off a charming and nice behavior as a typical teenage kid. She shows off alot of nice energy and enthusiasm for this part.
David Dastmalchian (Lester Billing) showed off a great disturbed and emotionless attitude when he's seeking for help. Brought his mysterious personality across perfectly. He for sure shows off that he's freaked out on what happened in his home when discussing it by taking therapy.
Marin Ireland (Rita Billings) was superbly mysterious with her soft but creepy and dark presence and speaking when she mentions to someone on the boogeyman. Also shows a good force of nature when using a shotgun really brining on the power with it all.

Patrick Jonsson was terrific with his music on this spooky flick. He shows great toned out violin music for the real dark moments. Also shows off great screeching sounds and banging too. Great hissing and blowing noises on things that go bump in the night. Defientely shows off terrific timing scene by scene. For sure makes it sound worthy for anyone who was afraid of the dark by how he composes all of this.
