A
couple named Micah (Micah Sloat) and
Katie (Katie Featherston) have moved into
a suburban house and three years later
the house seems to be haunted by an
entity during the witching hours. Katie
tells Micah that she's been haunted ever
since she was a child which Micah finds
this interesting and they buy a
videocamera to tape anything unusual as
well as going to the aid of a psychic
(Mark Frederichs) to help them and he
thinks that the house is trying to
communicate with them.
Micah borrows a ouija board and leaves
his camera rolling to see if there's
anything that will effect it while Katie
is upset that he brought the ouija board
into their house which can cause more
trouble.
Plus Katie seems to wake up in the middle
of the night in a trance and watches over
Micah for hours while he's fast asleep.
Plus, she doesn't seem like herself alot
by showing an aggressive attitude towards
him.
There's many
pointless conversations between both Katie and Micah when they videotape one another doing
some events in the daytime at the house
as you think to yourself "Get on
with it!"
There's also a bland scene with Katie talking to a psychic about the
paranormal activity that's happening in
their house with the scraping noises that Micah is videotaping them and
guiding him to where it's all happening
which didn't seem too convincing at all.
However there is a funny moment with Katie screaming while Micah runs into
the bathroom with his camera and they
discuss her screaming over a spider with
him zooming in on the spider and talking
to it which I had a chuckle out of.
There's a great moment with the camera
left on overnight while the two of them
are sleeping and an open door moves which
looked believeably spooky.
Good reactions on both of them
with their friend watching
the footage from that night as well as
trying to catch some sounds that they
hear while watching this footage which
looked fairly natural.
More good shots on them sleeping
with the camera on and then Katie waking up screaming as well as the two of
them hearing a sound and then getting up
and bringing their camera into the
hallways of the house trying to search
where it's coming from with the camera
shots running down a staircase or
spotting a hallway light that's jingling
which looked very haunting like and
suspenseful.
There's a good moment with Katie videotaping Micah holding a Ouija
board and setting it up with her freaking
out and getting vulgar that he has one
and demnding him to get rid of it which
looked quite intense.
A nice shot of the camera sitting
there with a plant moving in a breeze and
then the ouija board game piece moving
and going up in flames which looked quite
cheesy but fun to watch.
There's good quarelling between
both of them about who's more in control
about videotaping stuff in which it
looked very psychologically done in
good taste.
A good moment with the two of
them once again sleeping in bed and then Katie getting up and watching over Micah for hours and then walking away with him waking up and grabbing the camera to go
find her around the house which looked
very spooky as well as good shots on him
looking for her outside sitting on a
chair acting very out of it. It certainly
left a spooky impression.
There's another moment with them sleeping
and then a light flickering on with some
thumping sounds as well as the door
slamming and then they get up bringing
the camera towards the door to find
anything which sure scares the hell out
of you.
There's a good moment with Micah holding the camera with a microphone
trying to talk to the evil spirits in the
house which has a good still feeling to
it.
A nice shot on Katie sitting on her bed acting crazy and
aggressive towards him just not acting
herself which looked a little psychotic.
Also a good shot on her lying
down and crying with Slot putting the camera aside and lying next
to her in which they both acted natural
by doing this.
A good shot on Katie being dragged away by a force with her
screaming intensely and the door slamming
behind her and Micah trying to
get her which looked incredibly powerful.
There's a good conversation between Micah telling the psychic on what is
happening in the house with this psychic
getting uncomfortable telling them what
the problem is and trying to get away
from the house as soon as he can which
looked believeable too.
The work on the ending scene was very
spooky but I won't give that one away.
Bottom line is that I heard mixed
reviews about this movie and I had to say
that the film looked a bit boring for the
first part of it in which I was thinking
will it ever pick up and get more
frightening. Well it does and it did make
me jump a bit with the camera filming
while the couple are sleeping and crazy
things starts to happen. It just gets
spookier and spookier. There's great
reactions on the two as the house seems
to control them showing a psychological
element to it all.
The downfall of this is during the
daytime when they try to figure out what
they encopunter on the computer with
their other video camera attached or even
trying to mess with a ouija board by
leaving it alone looked quite bland and
cheesy. The filmmakers tried to make this
seem real but it fails a bit.
This film is a bit of a Blair
Witch Project ripoff but taking
place in a house instead of the woods and
dealing with a ghostly witch so they made
a couple deal with a ghostly demon. It's
nowhere near as spooky or effective
either.
The ending is extremely wierd though as
you think to yourself "What was that
all about?". The film leaves a
door open for a sequel and sure I will
check that one out too but this film is
saved from being average to above average
with the nighttime spooky scene's which
really is the only time that the film is
very effective. The rest of the times not
so much folks.
The acting is in
average shape as at times it looks
natural with how everyone reacts while
videotaping themselves and at times it
looked a bit acted out.
Katie Featherston comes across
aggressive nicely when she gets vulgar
and obnoxious over certain events that
happens in the house as well as knowing
how to scream bloody murder too when the
hauntings happen mainly when she wakes up
or experiences something. Plus knew how
to act like she was in a trance or
somewhat posessed but other times when
she performs this way she seemed to come
acorss as melodramatic at times.
Micah Slot as her boyfriend shows a
good goofball bublly and childish
attitude in the film as he brings some
good energy to his role and really
knowing how to act anxious when the
paranormal activities starts to occur and
he's encountering them. He seems to do a
fair job with all of this.
Micah: You're
screaming like that over a spider?
Katie: Well, yeah... did you go
run and get the camera first?
Katie: You promised
me you wouldn't get a fucking Ouija
board!
Micah: No - I promised I wouldn't
go *buy* Ouija board. I borrowed one.
Katie: I don't give
a fuck what that thing says on the Ouija
board!
Katie: I said don't
mess with that stuff, because it scared
me and what do you do? You go out and get
the best looking fucking Ouija board I've
ever seen and put it in the middle of our
living room? Explain that to me.
Micah: Look, babe,
can we talk about this? I mean, I'm in
control, I've been making progress,
and...
Katie: No, you haven't been making
progress, and you're *not* in control.
*It* is in control, and if you think
you're in control, then you're being an
idiot! Not a single thing you've done has
helped, and I'm sorry, I don't mean to
burst your bubble, but the camera hasn't
helped and the stupid footprints haven't
helped; do you think that thing would
have left footprints if it didn't want
to? No! It did it because it wanted to!
It wanted you to find my photo, it can be
anywhere, it can hear what we're saying
right now.
Micah: Hey, hey! How the fuck do
you know?
Katie: You are absolutely
powerless!
Micah: That... that's not true,
and you know it.
Katie: Well, get over it. |
