Dr. Jekyll (Frederic North) wants to marry his lover Muriel Carew (Rose Hobart) although her father Brigadier-General Carew (Halliwell Hobbes) declines her to do so.
Yet he is faced by a lusftful woman Ivy Pearson (Miriam Hopkins) so he is torn in two until he creates a potion to turn into two different people. Yet his creation as the other side of him Mr. Hyde has horrible consequences in which this form is animalistic making him out of control.

A mysterious beginning in the story with someone playing the organ as well as walking to another area. Makes you wonder as to who this person is. Yet he exposes himself in the mirror which is none than other Dr. Henry Jekyll. For sure well written in for an old fashioned horror story.

Nice settings with Henry dancing with his love Muriel Carew in a ballroom. Well focused shots on this. Looks convincing that they're having a good time.
Then later on some well focused moments on the two of them having a romantic discussion as well as some perfect charm to all this. He asks her to marry him. All of this was brought to life a great deal.
Also focused camera shot on each of them within this. It seems dated but yet making the moments look truly mysterious.

Henry is in a room with a broad there whom is Ivy Pearson as she tries to get lustful with him before going into her bed. Well focused situation with this. Made me wonder if he will give in to her or not. This moment also looked well done.

He discusses with Dr. Lanyon on a plan with his experiments on becoming two different people. This of course is a classic moment to anyone who remembers this story. It was a perfectly still moment while this was going on.

Then the excitement begins with him carefully making a potion as this was all well concentrated. Of course he starts to drink it. Then focused shots and expressions on his face changing. Suddenly he is this hideous force whom is Mr. Hyde. For a film of it's time this looked pretty impressive.

Hyde goes looking for Ivy in which he becomes wickedly charming towards her as well as going to her room. He gets very aggressive and forceful with her. Nice impression on Jekyll's evil side for sure. Not intense enough in today's standards but back then it would've worked well.

When Jekyll is back to himself again he tries to convince Muriel to marry him as there's some nice emotions with this scene. Also her father Brigadier-General Carew refuses him to marry her. Some nice tensions during all these moments in the story which shines off. Especially when they are about to agree to it without her father's approval.

Ivy goes to Jekyll with her experience on Hyde which was strongly done in on her crying emotions and being fearful on encountering him again. He assures her she will never see him again.
I really liked the outcome on this scene as it delivers some nice moments in an experimental horror story. It also made me wonder if this evil side of him will begone. Of course in a horror story that would be too good to be true.

Jekyll is near a park outside in which I spot him almost losing control which looked good as I had a feeling he was about to change. Good special effects occur here as he looks creepier than ever when he turns. Lots of good camera shots on him as well as his hands with body hairs growing and so fourth.
The intensity really happens when he crashes into Ivy's room and boy do things look violent for a film of it's time like this one. The horror kicks in a fair deal while I continued to watch. Also he's wearing a top hat and the classic suit like he's a magician. This showed off nicely for an old fashioned horror flick.

Hyde is refused to an entry to Jekyll's house in which things grow intense with someone pulling a gun on him and being demanding. It for sure made me wonder if he will shoot this freak. He has no choice but to show him a potion to turn back into Jekyll as the effects looked cool to watch here.
A good touch to the story for someone seeing his twisted little secret.

A total heartbreaking moment when Jekyll tells Muriel on breaking up with her as there's strong intensity here as well as good upsetting emotions. Certainly some nice dramatic situations.
He runs outside and then turns into Hyde which looked powerful to watch as well as him attacking her. This brought the terror nceily into the story.
Suddenly he is on the run from the police in which we see powerful struggles and fighting. Hyde was for sure a powerful force of nature during all of this. Terrific suspenseful and action packed sequences within all of this.

Bottom line is that this was a well done flick with technology getting better and moving away from silent films. This flick was a perfect example. Alot of dynamic and psychological moments in this one. During this time you could tell that this was a big budgeted flick for what we see here. If you like old horror/sci-fi flicks this one is worth checking out.

The acting in it's time was greatly performed but only certain one's worth mentioning.....

Frederic March (Dr. Henry Jekyll / Mr. Hyde) was fantastic with this role which suited him marelously. Shows off a good romantic and charming behavior. Also shows a good calm attitude making his part really likeable. Then when he turns shows another side in which he really sprung into action as this monstrous maniac acting deadly and obnoxious as well as forcefully demanding. In fact I wondered if it was a different actor portraying this role. He did it that well folks.

Miriam Hopkins (Ivy Pearson) does a nice job portaying a broad. She seemed to show off a good flirtatious and a bit of a sleazy attitude during one part of the scene. Also reacts well to being intimidated as well as sobbing later on in fear which really shined off in her performance. Also has a nice singing voice too which was another nice plus to her talents in this one.

Rose Hobart (Muriel Carew) was great as the romantic one. Offered a good girl attitude as well as being perfectly outgoing along with great energy into her part. She also does a good job with her anxious attitude as well as her crying which looked believably emotional. Reacts well in fear when she is attacked.

Halliwell Hobbes (Brigadier-General Carew) had a real effective supporting role as the family man. He was believably loving and caring. Does a nice job making his role uplifting and likeable. Also shows a good versatality when he gets anxious or aggressive. Had great hyped up energy when behaving like this.

Edgar Norton (Poole) seemed to shine off nicely with his happy go lucky behavior. Plus shows off a nice hyped up speaking when delivering his lines. He for sure had a hyper personality and had to mention him. Seemed to show it off on screen with his appeal too. A true character actor.

Not alot of music was composed in the story but during the opening and closing credits alot of great orchestral classical music with trombone and organ type music along with some violin music. It was brought together nicely like in any old fashioned horror flick during this time period. In the story when Jekyll turns to Hyde there's spooky sounding music that sounded great.
