Ezra, I thought you were great as Goggle in
Alexandre Aja's 2006 remake of 'The
Hills Have Eyes'. How did that
role come about?
It kind of started at
Sundance. I saw Alexandre's "Haute
Tension" at a midnight screening and was
blown completely away. Cut to a year or so later
when I read in the trades that he was writing and
directing "Hills Have Eyes" with Wes's
approval and I went kind of ape-shit. I did
everything I could to get into that room. Calls,
favors, threats, whatever it took. It struck me
as a match made in heaven. Which it turned out to
be. When I auditioned for the film they brought
me in for Big Brain. I passionately explained to
Alex and Gregory how much I'd loved "Haute
Tension" and why and then read for them.
But, I didn't hear anything for a long time. Just
rumors of putting the shoot off, etc. I assumed
I'd missed out. Then one day a call came from my
agent and I booked Goggle. I was a little
disappointed at first because I really dug Big
Brain. But then, the first time I saw the mock-up
of Goggle's make-up, my heart melted when I
looked in his eyes. He struck me as so sad. And
lonely. I loved Goggle the first time I ever saw
him. (I've attached a pic of the prototype that
KNB made. The one I fell in love with.)
What things
did you think and do to maintain character when
your were Goggle?
To find
Goggle all I ever had to do was look in a mirror.
I came up with an entire backstory about how he
had been given the derby hat by a travelling band
of hippies when he was a kid. The commune was
devoured by his family and, as a result, he'd
kind of distanced himself from them. That's why
he's the lookout. He's still connected but not
involved with the killing or the eating. Goggle
only eats animals.
Your career as
an actor has been so varied with roles in
everything from 'Ghost World',
'Fight Club', 'The
Prestige', 'Art
School Confidential', 'Magnolia',
'Me Myself and Irene',
etc. However, with 'The Hills Have
Eyes' you have gained a slew of
horror fans. What about that phenomenon has
surprised you?
How
incredibly cool everybody is. I've worked three
horror films now (Hills, Zombie's Halloween, and
Aja's Mirrors - and I'm about to work on Sid
Haig's next film - Wittenberg) and with no
exception, everybody on set is rowing in the same
direction and just a dream to work with. That's
not always the case in the movies. But I really
think that horror peeps are a different breed
alltogether. Love 'em. And I'm totally digging on
the convention scene. I've made some great
friends and the fans totally rock my world.
Everybody's so cool.
What has been
the most surreal/memorable experience you have
had at the convention venues thusfar?
Haha.
Probably the time a guy came up to me at Rock and
Shock and spent about an hour explaining to me
how a dog would never do what either Beauty or
Beast did in real life. Whatever that meant.
Still not sure. But he was convinced that it was
wrong. Whatever "it" was. Nice guy, but
settle down, you know? Just a movie and all that.
But all in all, I love working the conventions.
It's a party all weekend.
'The
Hills Have Eyes' also seems to
have brought you some new horror roles. First off
I want to hear about your work as Grant Clark in
Rob Zombie's soon-to-be-released remake of 'Halloween'.
Tell me about that experience?
Well,
first of all I think Rob's a genius. His style
totally blows me away. Again, this matchup feels
like a no-brainer to me. Just a marriage made in
hell. The day I got killed by Michael Myers we
were under the gun because it happened to be
opening night at my theatre company in Hollywood
and I was the lead! So we really had to kick ass
to get stuff done so I'd have time to get to the
theatre and open. Rob and crew did everything
within their power to help me out and I'll just
never forget that. Tyler was great to work with
too, and since I'm a very physical actor (which
means I like working with the character's body
movements and stuff) it was wonderful to be
stunting with him. Sybil Danning stopped by the
set one day and it's always great to see her. The
pic I have of Rob and me together is something I
cherish.
You've been on
so many film and television sets over the years,
what was unique about the mood or atmosphere on
the Rob Zombie set?
It was
fucking funny. Everybody was laughing and having
a great time. And the craft service was superior
whoever did that. It was also quick. At least for
me. No wasting time.
You also have
a film coming out called 'The
Haunting of Marsten Manor'. Tell
me a bit about that project.
This is a
film that was shot in Utah. It has an... um...
point of view. It's a sweet film ultimately about
a woman's faith. Young, blind girl inherits a
house. It's haunted by the spirit of a woman from
the civil war who needs to have some things
resolved and needs this girl, her distant
relative, to help her out with it. It's kind of
Christiany. Which is fine. Good, fine people on
that set. And the house they shot in and we were
put up in is a beautiful turn-of-the-century bed
and breakfast. Believe me, it beats working! My
guy is your typical creepy gas station attendant
with a secret. Shhhh. Not sure where that one'll
end up. Hope it works out well. Wouldn't it be
funny if I ended up with a strong religious
following? Well, I think it'd be funny, anyway.
I also want to
hear about the upcoming horror movie you are
doing with Keifer Sutherland called
'Mirrors'. Can you give me a
teaser that is going to make it irresistable to
the www.racksandrazors.com readers?
Irresistable?
It's directed by Alexandre Aja. I wouldn't need
anything else at all. Possessed mirrors meets the
director of Hills and Haute Tension. And written
by Gregory Levasseur and Aja. That should get
some butts in seats. My guy is an unfortunate. He
set fire to a department store because he
believed that the mirrors killed his family. I'm
the only one who got out alive and I'm horribly
scarred from the fire. KNB did the makeup for
this one as well. And it looks horrifying! I'd
attach a pic but New Regency would be knocking on
my door in a matter of hours.
Do you have
any other projects pending that you would like
our readers to know about?
I am
inexplicably in Underdog. I'm a hot dog
contestant judge. You might end up seeing my
mid-section. Very anxious to work with Sid Haig
on his next project "Wittenberg". Kids
meet reality show shot in mental institution. I'm
one of the creepy patients. The Thin Man. Will
probably shave my head for that one. I'll look
like a skinny Joe Knetter! That's the least I
could do for Sid. Also, I play a football ref in
the opening moments of George Clooney's
"Leatherheads". I think that'll open
near Xmas or something. To keep up to date with
all things Buzzington, check out my myspace at www.myspace.com/buzzington . And write me. I
always, always get back to peeps. Kind of an
addict, I'm thinking. Oh! Almost forgot. I'm
shooting an indie this summer called
"Trickery/Mimicry". It'll feature me
and Camden Toy in tour de force roles. It's by a
new, young director named Garrett D. Tiedemann.
We'll shoot that this summer in Minnesota.
Okay, we're
pulling the car into the Ezra Buzzington Drive
In. What three horror movies are going to be on
the triple bill tonight?
Halloween,
The Evil Dead, House of 1000 Corpses.
What makes you
go psycho in real life?
LA
Traffic and injustice. People being late.
Passive/agressive behavior.
What scares
you in real life?
Being
unloved. Being homeless. Losing my health. Glenn
Beck, Dr. Phil and that bitch lawyer person on
CNN. |
