I met Robert when I first went to a Weekend of Horrors convention as I don't recall the name of it in Burbank, California in 2010 in which I got aquainted with him. He was out of a coma for a long time and was in rough shape but I hung out with him at his hotel and he paid my way in a return favor on helping him out.
Most of us called him Bobby as I was one of them. This was my first time as a horror convention and had a great time in which he had a table with the other cast from 'Maniac Cop'. We hit it off as friends and sometimes kept in touch.
Let's get to his career in horror films shall we?
Although he did many filmwork before as the title role Matt Cordell in 'Maniac Cop', that was the first film I spotted him in as it was an action, crime and horror combined into one. Alot of the times he wasn't fully revealed in person and lurking in the dark shadows. Yet this flick made him a horror icon even if he was in a horror flick, in fact his first film role, in 'Hellhole'.
I was very fond of this flick as he acted opposite of Bruce Campbell and Tom Atkins. He really looked creepy when he was fully revealed near the end of his fate. This flick earned a limited theatrical release and a cult favourite amongst action/horror fans.
Two sequels followed in which he reprised his role in but weren't as good.
He played a supporting role in a direct-to-video release as a member of a vicious gang named Eric named 'Grotesque' in which it co-starred Linda Blair. Also it was very disturbing to watch as to what they do to her onscreen father. It's not for everyone's taste. But hey, it's just a movie.
I also remember him acting opposite of Joe Estevez as the Angel of Death in the fantasy/horror flick 'Soultaker' which was a fun one to watch in which he had an effective supporting role in this one. It was a low budgeter that had a limited theatrical release and apparently did fairly well in the box office on the selected cinemas that it was shown at.
Due to all of this he had many roles in other independent horror flicks that weren't as well known. Some good and some not so good as he worked with many cult icons in which he sometimes worked with them in other shows especially Estevez in which they bonded a friendship.
Some of these ones included 'Evil Altar', 'Fresh Kill', 'The Deadly Avenger', 'Scarytales: The Return of Mr. Longfellow', 'Vampire Blvd.', 'The Rockville Slayer', 'Super Hell', 'Drawing Blood', 'Easter Sunday' and 'A Blood Story' to name some.
He also worked in other genre's such as action, thriller and comedy flicks. Plus he guested in the odd TV show too.
Last time I spoke to him he asked me to call him in the week sometime which slipped my mind and then later on in March 30, 2015 he died of cardiac arrest as it saddned me since he was always very kind hearted to me. He was 64 years of age. I was aware his health was worstening.
He was a frequent guest at horror conventions plus some films he acted in earlier got released some time after his death. I will always remember the good times I was at the con with him as he even introduced me to his fellow co-stars from 'Maniac Cop' like Laurene Landon and William Smith (As he was another one who passed on in 2021). Very nice people in which they didn't have a Hollywood attitude whatsoever. Bruce Campbell also attended but was at a different table with a big line up from fans asking for autographs. He moved on to mainstream TV shows and apparently didn't pay attention to Z'Dar or the other cast of this flick that attended. His loss.
